New members’ evening tonight

Don’t forget, tonight is Red Leicester Choir’s evening designed to give potential new members a taste of what being in the choir is like. We’ll be performing some songs and teaching a few too. If you think you’d enjoy singing with us, please come along; it will run from 7.30 to 9.30pm, and takes place at our usual rehearsal venue, the Secular Hall, Humberstone Gate (opposite Sainsbury’s).

Red Leicester on Radio Leicester!

This afternoon, choir members Glenys and Colleen appeared on Jim Davis’ show on BBC Radio Leicester, talking about Red Leicester (and a great job they did too). Frank has kindly converted their interview into an MP3, which is available here (the link will lead you to WikiUploads; click on the green ‘Download This File’ button).

Thinking of trying Red Leicester?

Term has started, which means choir rehearsals have started again too – every Wednesday at 7.30pm in the Secular Hall, as usual! It was great to get singing again yesterday, and to meet some new members. If you’re thinking about giving Red Leicester a go, we’re having a New Members’ Evening on Wednesday the 22nd of September. This is something we do every year, and although we welcome new members all year round, we like to have a special rehearsal in the autumn term that acts as a taster for anyone who fancies singing with us. There will be a chance to hear songs from across our repertoire, and of course to join in and learn one or two of them!

Everyone is welcome; we are an open-access socialist choir with no auditions, and you don’t need to be able to read music – some of our members do, but many learn by ear.

June newsletter

Lots happening this Spring!

Red Leicester have been pretty busy recently, with plenty more coming up in May and June.

On the 24th of April we held our (usually) annual fundraiser, joining forces with the Greenshoots Ceilidh Orchestra to raise money for the choir and for the Red Cross appeal for the earthquake in Haiti. It was a great success, and we raised over £500 for the appeal. A big thank you to everyone who came along and danced with us!

Some members of our choir have also been very busy organising the third annual Leicester Sing for Water, which takes place on Sunday 6th June in Bede Park. Lots of Red Leicester singers will be attending to raise money for WaterAid – if you’re interested in singing with us, take a look at leicestersingforwater.org.uk.

Red Leicester will be one of 25 choirs singing for 25 minutes each at the LOROS 25th Anniversary concert on Saturday 26th June, at Longslade Community College in Birstall.

We are also busy preparing our songs for the National Street Choir Festival in Sheffield, which takes place from the 9th to the 11th of July. This is a great event, bringing together choirs from all over the UK, and we’re looking forward to performing in the concert, busking on the streets of Sheffield, and taking part in workshops.
