MIDI files

Jane and I spent a couple of hours wrestling with software this morning, and have managed to create MIDI files for some of the songs we sing at Red Leicester – see the music page for full details. For every song, we created a file with all of the parts playing together, in addition to separate files for each part. We hope that these might come in useful for members of the choir who would like to learn their part. Of course, it also provides non-members with the opportunity to hear some of what we sing (the tunes at least – we don’t quite have the manpower to record singing voices for all of these parts!). We’re working on adding more files to the page, and are hoping to upload pdf files of the scores for these songs too.

New Members’ Evening

On Wednesday the 24th of September the choir had a new members’ evening. Of course we welcome new members all year round, but this offered an opportunity to hear (and join in with!) a range of songs from across our repertoire. Several new people attended the meeting, and the choir members enjoyed meeting them. We taught Siyahamba, a popular African song from the socialist repertoire, and performed You’ve Got a Friend.

London Sing for Water

A large handful of singers from Red Leicester (and Leicester Amika Choir) travelled down to London last weekend to take part in London Sing for Water at the Thames Festival 2008. After a couple of rehearsals, we took to the stage with around 1000 others to sing six songs, in the hopes of raising money for WaterAid projects in Ghana.

The weather was stunning, which probably helped to contribute to the large crowd that gathered around the Scoop (outside City Hall) on Sunday afternoon. The singing itself was exhilarating, and the audience seemed to enjoy themselves too. Red Leicester also took part in the Marasong, performing a short busking set near to HMS Belfast.

Some photos of the event can be seen at our flickr page.

Oxfam Bread and Cheese Lunch

Saturday 11th October, 12 noon – 2pm

Red Leicester choir will be singing at a special bread and cheese lunch to raise money for Oxfam. There will also be second hand books and fairly traded goods for sale. The event will take place at Emmanuel Church, Forest Rd, Loughborough.

Singing for the Secular Society

This evening Red Leicester performed a varied selection from their repertoire to a select number of the Leicester Secular Society!

We sang in the Secular Hall – a very familiar environment for the choir, as members have been rehearsing there since 1997 – and enjoyed the opportunity to explain a little about who we are and what we sing.

Many thanks to the Secular Society for the warm welcome (and luxury biscuits!).
