Supporting striking public sector workers

Today several members of Red Leicester were striking to defend their public sector pensions, and the choir joined in with the Leicester march from High Street to the Athena. We sang in Orton Square as people arrived (as best we could over the fantastic sound of thousands of people and lots of whistles, vuvuzelas and drums!), and then onstage at the end of the rally.

The song ‘Tory Toffs’, which we picked up from Strawberry Thieves at Raise Your Banners last weekend, seemed to go down particularly well with the marchers:

Tory, Tory cuts no thanks, Sir
Nick and David love the bankers
We think they’re a load of… Tory toffs
No ifs no buts no public sector cuts

Raise Your Banners 2011

Last weekend, a fair slice of Red Leicester went to the Raise Your Banners festival of political song in Bradford. We sung with many other socialist choirs at the Cathedral, went to some fantastic workshops, and had the opportunity to go to gigs by Seize the Day, Sisters Unlimited, Gilad Atzmon, Peggy Seeger and many others!
